BIG? NOT YET

B?NY | #017 | set up your own listening party (and join ours)

Last Sunday we hosted our very first (online) listening party, and it was so much fun. We used a platform called JQBX.fm, which allows music lovers to gather in the same virtual room and listen to the same music simultaneously. There’s even a DJing queue that anyone can join to be able to choose the upcoming tunes that will be played.

We plan to host more of these listening parties. In case you are curious about them, make sure to stay tuned to our Instagram account.

As usual, this edition of the newsletter is another beautiful and engaging sound collection featuring six different emerging artists. We would like to encourage you to access the playlist, save it on Spotify, press play, and set up your very own listening party!

"In Threes" is an album brimming with life; its concise 25 minutes of length are enough to portray them to any far away listeners. An artsy outburst of sounds. There's an anti-automated aim in Handle coming from this frenetic timing that embraces virtuosity. The lead voice has its own space, clear and punchy, and there's room for plenty of post-punk experimentation. Oh, magicians of time organization, how could you come up with such coherent and sly smoothness? Can't wait to witness it live.

Watch out, their beats and verses explode with the same intensity. Mundane ephemeral feelings are next to highly political sentences. See "my only currency is ideas / our skin, my peers" from "DON’T SHUT ME DOWN", or the whole "I Put The Whole Life On The Internet". In a present time where raging injustices vary from day to day, institutional problems have been endured for ages. This dichotomy is also present in the groundbreaking launching-in-pairs method they’ve been following. LOWERLIPDRIP are part of a creators' collective born in a beating Chicago DIY production scenery. As they told @thefader, “we're trying to make escapism music". And we do agree.

Organic melodies, a tablespoon of hybrid trip hop and beautiful loops. Welcome to a nostalgia whirlwind of something you only experienced daydreaming. Rooted in the seaside tides and the Portuguese melodic nostalgia, HAĒMA, in collaboration with Baiuca, released "Adélia" this summer, a version of the traditional Portuguese tune "Vou au restaurante", and turned it into a magnificent mantra. They can tell intricate stories –Preamar (2018) is preciously narrated– where shadows and lights intertwine in music. Some jazz and sweet electronica that form a glimpse into both ancient and futuristic dance music.

orbit is a chewing gum brand, but also the artistic name of Marcel, a Germany-based producer whose debut EP released earlier this year definitely stands out. Having already had the chance to perform for an international audience –after winning a contest with the rock band he formed at the age of 14 along his brother–, now he is proving he is also capable of crafting beautiful electronic progressions that you might want to play all day on repeat. We have to admit that the synth line in “Perspectives” caught us from the very first listen.

Although now based in London, this New Zealander has evoked us to a different dimension. Her sensational vocals mixed with a refreshing and rich indie-rock sound make us want to shout the lyrics out loud while getting our feelings out of our chest. With all of her songs released this odd year, she has landed both in our playlists and our imaginary to stay.

Someone New (2020) must be carefully listened to, paying attention to its details and even more to its beautifully-written lyrics. Helena Deland presents her first album, a whole set of compact tracks with a full clear concept behind it, and makes you find yourself reflecting with her. Questions about our self, who we are, or who we expect to be in our own eyes, or in the eyes of our lovers. Although her music already helps us getting to know her, for once we will also recommend reading her interviews. A true inspirational character.
