BIG? NOT YET

B?NY | #010 | a bigger splash

Hi there! These weeks we have been trying to improve our visual identity. We wanted to celebrate the 10th edition of the newsletter –which is a BIG thing– by presenting you a renewed style. This new "bubbly" identity aims to reflect that B?NY is constantly moving, like the bubbles in the sea.

In this issue we wanted to travel far away, to explore the fusion of bright genres and to succumb to unusual rhythms, embrace repetition and welcome its powerful catharsis. Percussion is, in B?NY #010, a bigger splash.

The ensemble, based on their live project that samples percussion, allows us to enter in a trance-like state of mind. Electronic and synths occupy the spaces between the traditional rhythms turning into a harmonic, ecstatic repetition. A blessed project that just launched their first LP, Kaloli.

Meet Honeywhip, an LA-based duo that has just released a stream of lo-fi indie themes perfect for the summer. What started in a small Tokyo apartment, has grown into a dream bedroom-produced pop & soul that perfectly hits on the emotions of lockdown loneliness with songs like "Think About U" or the freshly “Like Ice”.

Experimenting with analogic tools and improvisation, BVO have mastered a jazzy - psychedelic mature formula. Have a listen to the French ensemble with their 2020 release "The Course", a meticulously handcrafted album. BVO achieve a wide sound palette with many hypnotic moments born from repetition, a musical strudel where free jazz meets electronic tools and develops a strong sense of spirituality.

Some songwriting on "falling in love, too fast and too hard". Oops. CP just dropped Balance / Contrast, a smooth debut EP about desire; a quiet nocturnal urban drive that explores R&B with a chill-out language. Their lovely funky falsetto ressembles well-known idols like Parcels or Local Natives, plus adding a characteristic electronic touch.

Strength. Emotion. Determination. Courage. These are some of the words that wander our minds when we think of Ayoni. Yet, they are not enough to fairly describe this talented artist from Barbados now established in LA. The 21-year-old debuted in late 2019 with Iridescent, a majestic self-produced album that delightfully blends genres such as R&B, soul, electronic or indie-pop with her enchanting voice as protagonist. Recently, she released “Unmoved (A Black Woman Truth)”, a powerful track in which she exposes the pain she has suffered throughout her life due to her skin color. It is more than just a song, please go give it a listen.
